Description
Shuvinai Ashoona
Shuvinai Ashoona (b. 1961) is one of the most influential contemporary Inuit artists working today. Based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, she is known for an expansive and inventive practice that moves fluidly between detailed realism, imagined worlds, and cosmological landscapes. Her drawings and prints explore Inuit life, transformation, and interconnected worlds with remarkable clarity and originality. Ashoona has been widely exhibited internationally and in 2018 received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, one of Canada’s highest artistic honours. Her work is held in major museum collections and she is widely regarded as one of the great figures in the history of Inuit art.
