Description
The kudlik, also known as the traditional Inuit oil lamp, played a crucial role in Arctic survival. Crafted from stone and fueled by seal or whale oil, it served as a source of light, heat, and food preparation during the extended polar winters. Due to the need for mobility—whether on foot or by sledge—the kudlik was among the few stone items carried by Inuit populations. This fine sculpture likely originates from Salluit, where several artists named Kalingo. It demonstrates that the Inuit were adept at carving stone long before the commercialization of their artworks. Today, the kudlik continues to symbolize Inuit heritage, resilience, and the deep connection between individuals and their environment.
