Description

Pitseolak Ashoona

(1904–1983)

Piseolak Ashoona was an Inuit artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, and one of the most important early figures in the development of Inuit graphic art. She began drawing in the late 1950s after settling in Kinngait, creating detailed and expressive images that documented traditional Inuit life, including hunting, camp scenes, and seasonal activities. Her work provided a vital visual record of life on the land during a period of rapid cultural transition. Many of her drawings were translated into prints in the early Cape Dorset annual print collections, helping to establish the foundation of the community’s internationally recognized printmaking tradition. Today, her work is widely held in major museum and private collections and is regarded as central to the history of Inuit art.
