Kananginak Pootoogook

Kananginak Pootoogook (1935–2010) was one of the most accomplished Inuit artists and printmakers to emerge from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut. Renowned for his detailed and naturalistic depictions of birds, animals, and northern life, his work is celebrated for its precision, compositional strength, and deep observational skill. A master of drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, Pootoogook was a central figure in the Cape Dorset print program for decades. In 2002, he received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, affirming his place as one of the great figures in Inuit art history.
