Description
Toonoo Sharky
Toonoo Sharky (B. 1970) is an Inuit artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, widely recognized for a distinctive visual language that combines observation, imagination, and wit. His work spans multiple media, including drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, and is unified by a strong sense of line and animated form.
Sharky’s imagery often draws from animals, figures, and scenes familiar to northern life, but these subjects are frequently transformed through exaggeration, unexpected combinations, or subtle narrative twists. This approach gives his work an immediacy and accessibility that resonates with a broad range of collectors while remaining firmly grounded in Inuit experience.
In sculpture, Sharky translates his graphic sensibility into three dimensions. Forms are simplified yet expressive, emphasizing gesture and character over surface detail. The natural qualities of the stone remain visible, reinforcing the handmade nature of the work and its connection to material.
Across prints and sculpture, Toonoo Sharky’s art is valued for its originality and visual confidence. His work appeals to collectors who appreciate imaginative interpretation and strong personal voice, offering a contemporary expression of Inuit art that is engaging, memorable, and well suited to both private and professional collections.
All works are created by hand. Natural variations in materials and finish are an inherent and valued part of each piece.
