Description
Joe Talirunili
(1893–1976)
Joe Talirunili was an Inuit artist from Puvirnituq (Povungnituk), Nunavik, Québec, best known for his expressive sculptures and prints that recount a remarkable episode from his early life. As a young man, Talirunili survived a dramatic journey across Hudson Bay on an improvised raft with several companions after their umiak was lost. This experience became the subject of many of his artworks, in which figures, animals, and boats are arranged in lively, narrative compositions. Working primarily in stone sculpture as well as drawing and printmaking, Talirunili developed a highly distinctive style that combines storytelling, humor, and bold form. Today his work is widely collected and recognized as an important contribution to the history of Inuit art.
