Description
Mary Ayaq Anowtalik
(1938–2024)
Mary Ayaq Anowtalik was an Inuit artist from Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq), Nunavut, associated with the community’s distinctive drawing and printmaking tradition. Her work often depicts animals, figures, and scenes from life on the land, rendered with a strong sense of design and clarity of form. Like many Baker Lake artists, Anowtalik developed a highly individual approach to composition, frequently organizing figures in rhythmic arrangements across the picture plane. Her drawings were translated into prints through the Baker Lake annual collections, where her work contributed to the development of a bold and graphic regional style. Today, her prints are collected for their balance of narrative content and formal structure within the Baker Lake tradition.
