Description

Pitaloosie Saila

(1942–2021)

Pitaloosie Saila was an Inuit artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, known for her imaginative drawings and prints featuring animals, birds, and fantastical creatures. The daughter of renowned artist Pitseolak Ashoona, Saila grew up within one of the most influential artistic families in the history of Inuit art and began drawing in the early 1960s. Her work is recognized for its playful invention, often transforming familiar Arctic animals into spirited, dreamlike beings rendered with bold colour and expressive line. Saila contributed works to the annual Cape Dorset print collections over several decades, and her images remain widely collected for their energy, humor, and originality within the Kinngait graphic tradition.
