Description

Shuvinai Ashoona

(b. 1961)
Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut

Shuvinai Ashoona is one of the most widely recognized contemporary Inuit artists working today. Based in Kinngait, Nunavut, she is known for highly imaginative drawings that combine elements of everyday northern life with visionary and fantastical imagery.

Born into a family of artists—she is the daughter of renowned Inuit artist Kiakshuk—Ashoona began drawing in the early 1990s through the Kinngait Studios program. Her work quickly gained attention for its originality and complexity, expanding the visual language traditionally associated with Inuit graphic art.
Ashoona’s drawings often feature detailed landscapes, animals, human figures, and invented creatures arranged within expansive, carefully structured compositions. Her imagery moves fluidly between observation and imagination: Arctic scenes may coexist with surreal transformations, floating worlds, or symbolic forms. Rendered with precise line and vibrant colour, these compositions invite extended viewing and interpretation.

In addition to drawing, Ashoona’s work has been translated into limited-edition prints through the Kinngait Studios annual collections, bringing her imagery to a wide audience of collectors and institutions. Her work has also been exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections.
Today, Shuvinai Ashoona is recognized as a leading voice in contemporary Inuit art. Her work bridges tradition and experimentation, offering a distinctive perspective that reflects both the cultural foundations of Kinngait and the evolving possibilities of Inuit graphic expression.
