Description

Barbara Kabluitor

This finely constructed inukshuk by Barbara Kabluitor is an unusual and highly considered example of Rankin Inlet stone sculpture. Unlike more commonly encountered inuksuit carved from a single block, this work is built from a deliberate stacking of five distinct stone layers, incorporating three different types of stone to create subtle variation in tone, texture, and weight.
The composition is carefully resolved, with select levels featuring shallow carved grooves along the front edge while others are left smooth, introducing a quiet rhythm between surface interruption and restraint. This interplay of carved and uncarved planes gives the work a measured architectural quality, emphasizing balance, proportion, and material dialogue over literal representation.
At 4 1/2″ x 3″ x 8″, the scale is intimate, but the piece carries a strong sense of presence. Its construction reflects a thoughtful engagement with the inukshuk form not as a simplified symbol, but as a structured object shaped through accumulation and placement.
Both sculptural and conceptual in approach, this is a distinctive work within Rankin Inlet carving traditions, notable for its material sensitivity and its departure from more standardized, single-stone interpretations of the inukshuk form.
