The Art of Noticing - Robert Pasternak leaning in to notice art

Katie + Gunner Gallery is pleased to present The Art of Noticing, a solo exhibition by Winnipeg artist Robert Pasternak, opening May 1st and running through May 30, 2026.

Working across drawing, painting, comics, and experimental media for over four decades, Pasternak has built a practice rooted in attentive observation and imaginative transformation. The Art of Noticing brings this sensibility into sharp focus through a body of intimately scaled works that reward slow looking—paired with an exhibition design that playfully disrupts expectations of size and perspective.

At the heart of the exhibition is a conceptual inversion: small, detailed works are presented with the visual weight and drama typically reserved for large-scale painting. This reversal invites viewers to reconsider how attention operates—how meaning emerges not from spectacle, but from sustained engagement with the overlooked.

Pasternak’s career spans illustration, experimental comics, performance, and film. His publications include Twilight of Echelon (2025), FastForward (2022), and Place Into Being (2019/2023), and his work has appeared internationally in books, exhibitions, and screenings, including the Melbourne International Animation Festival and the Venice Film Festival. He has exhibited in Canada and the United States, notably at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, and has been the subject of critical attention in publications such as the Winnipeg Free Press.

Throughout his work, Pasternak moves fluidly between the microscopic and the cosmic, often collapsing distinctions between inner and outer worlds. His imagery—at once meticulous and intuitive—reflects a lifelong engagement with perception, consciousness, and the imaginative potential of drawing.

The Art of Noticing continues this trajectory while offering a timely reflection on how we see. In an environment saturated with images, Pasternak’s work proposes an alternative: that attention itself can be a creative act.
