Description

Elvis Antoine

Elvis Antoine (1957–2023) was an Indigenous artist from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation and Brandon, Manitoba, celebrated for his vivid acrylic paintings rooted in Dakota cultural identity and the vast landscapes of the plains. Signing many works with his Dakota name Sunkė Sapa Hdeṡhka (“Black Spotted Horse”), Antoine developed a distinct visual language that blends saturated colour, symbolic imagery, and prairie space — often featuring horses, eagles, and other powerful figures that evoke both personal story and ancestral presence. Mentored early by seminal Cree artist Jackson Beardy and formally trained at the University of Manitoba, he painted dynamic vistas over a 35-year career. Antoine’s work has been shown in public and private exhibitions and is including paintings selected for display in the Senate of Canada.
