Description

Pudlo Pudlat

(1916–1992)

Pudlo Pudlat was an Inuit artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, and one of the most distinctive figures in the history of Inuit graphic art. Beginning his artistic career later in life after an injury limited his ability to hunt, Pudlat developed a highly individual drawing style that combined traditional Inuit subjects with imagery of modern life, including airplanes, helicopters, and technology. His work is characterized by simplified forms, bold colour, and a unique sense of space, often blending observation with imagination. Pudlat contributed extensively to the Cape Dorset annual print collections from the 1960s through the early 1990s, and his work is widely regarded as innovative within the Kinngait tradition.
