Bill (Billy) Merkosak

Pond Inlet (b. 1966)

Billy Merkosak is a celebrated Inuit sculptor from Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet), Nunavut, known for his distinctive carvings in whalebone, stone, and antler. Drawing inspiration from Inuit oral traditions, archaeology, and the stories of Elders, Merkosak creates works that bridge the ancient and contemporary worlds of the Arctic.

Among the few Inuit artists working extensively with traditional mask forms, his sculptures often explore themes of transformation, spirituality, and cultural memory. Rich in symbolism and craftsmanship, Merkosak’s work reflects a deep connection to Inuit heritage while offering a highly personal artistic vision.
His carvings have been exhibited across Canada and are held in numerous public and private collections, earning him recognition as one of the most innovative sculptors to emerge from Pond Inlet.
