Description
Myra Kukiiyaut
Baker Lake (1948–2019)
Myra Kukiiyaut was an Inuit artist from Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq), Nunavut, recognized for imaginative drawings and prints that explore the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds. Her work frequently depicts transformation figures, helping spirits, and symbolic imagery rooted in Inuit oral tradition, often combining human and animal forms in richly detailed compositions. While grounded in the distinctive Baker Lake drawing tradition, Kukiiyaut developed a highly personal visual language characterized by intricate pattern, balanced design, and a quiet sense of mystery. Her drawings were translated into limited-edition prints through the Baker Lake annual print collections, where they became known for their originality and narrative depth. Today, her work is appreciated for its ability to bridge traditional Inuit knowledge with a contemporary artistic vision, making her one of Baker Lake’s most distinctive graphic artists.
