Martha Ittuluka’naaq

Baker Lake (1912–1981)

Martha Ittuluka’naaq was an Inuit artist from the Kazan River region who settled in Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq), Nunavut, in 1961 and became one of the pioneering artists of the community’s emerging print program. Beginning her artistic career in her late fifties, Ittuluka’naaq developed a strikingly original visual language defined by simplified forms, rhythmic repetition, and an extraordinary economy of line. Drawing inspiration from the animals and life of the inland Arctic, she often reduced figures to elegant silhouettes that seem to float across the page with remarkable balance and movement. This highly individual approach is thought to have been influenced in part by her experience as a seamstress, sometimes using cut-paper shapes as the basis for her compositions. Her drawings were translated into a small but important group of prints for the early Baker Lake annual collections, where their quiet originality helped establish the distinctive graphic identity of the community. Today, her work is admired for its modern sensibility, formal innovation, and significant contribution to the formative years of Baker Lake printmaking.
