Description
Padloo Samayualie
(b. 1977) Kinngait/Cape Dorset, NU
Padloo Samayualie is best known for her detailed drawings in coloured pencil and ink. Her work finds inspiration in the world around her, from the architecture and surrounding landscape of her Arctic community to the everyday objects and activities of contemporary life. With a keen eye for detail and an often playful perspective, Samayualie transforms familiar subjects into distinctive compositions that invite closer looking.
Samayualie began pursuing her drawing practice more seriously after attending a workshop in Banff in 2001. She has also explored animation, sculpture and jewellery making. Art runs deep in her family: her grandmother, Keeleemeeoomie Samayualie, and aunt, Elijakota Samayualie, were both accomplished graphic artists, while her maternal grandparents, Qababuwa and Taraya Tunnillie, were renowned sculptors.
Samayualie’s work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally, and is held in public collections, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery–Qaumajuq. Her distinctive approach offers an engaging portrait of contemporary life in Kinngait, seen through an observant and distinctly individual artistic lens.
