Greg Fritz – Stone Carver
ᐊᐧᓂᐢᑲ
waniskâ – Wake Up And Rise
Greg started carving 20 years ago after receiving a gift of some carving tools and a piece of soapstone.
With practice, patience, passion and a couple of classes he became talented at bringing out the story that the stone had to tell.
Greg takes his time making his art; only producing two pieces a year.
He resists cutting corners and thus uses no power tools – every part of the carving is done by hand with basic hand tools.
Greg’s inspiration has always come for nature and storytelling.
His pieces often resemble indigenous style and themes.
Knowing that he was adopted at birth he decided, late in life, to seek out his birth mother.
Upon finding his mother, and finding out about his Cree heritage, he realized where his artistic style came from; since then he has embraced his Cree culture and names each piece in Cree.
Greg carves for the love of creating art.
Aside from a few small exhibitions Greg has not sold his sculpture. He doesn’t want the pressure of producing art for profit to influence his work.
Instead, he takes his time, works by hand to create pieces of art that he is deeply connected to and proud of.
This approach shows in his work – the quality, personality and attention to detail are fantastic.
We are proud to be the gallery that Greg chose for his commercial debut.
Please join us for this intimate exhibit of some of Greg’s 20 years of work. 14 sculptures on exhibit.
