Description
Thomas Iksiraq
(1941-2023)
Thomas Iksiraq is an Inuit artist from Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq), Nunavut, known for his detailed and expressive drawings. His work often explores themes of wildlife, hunting, and the relationship between people and the land.
Working primarily in graphite and coloured pencil, Iksiraq creates compositions defined by intricate linework and strong structure. Animals such as caribou and birds are rendered with care, sometimes arranged in rhythmic, patterned compositions that balance observation with stylization.
His work reflects the Baker Lake tradition of skilled draftsmanship while maintaining a distinct personal voice, and is valued for its precision, visual complexity, and connection to Inuit life.
