Description

Alasuaq Sharky

(b. 1978)

Alasuaq Sharky is an Inuit artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, known primarily for his stone sculptures depicting Arctic animals such as bears, birds, and marine life. Working within a strong family tradition of carving, he began sculpting at a young age, learning alongside his brothers in a community where carving remains a central artistic practice. His work is characterized by solid form, balanced composition, and an emphasis on the physical presence of the animal subject. In addition to sculpture, Sharky has produced drawings that have been translated into limited-edition prints through the Kinngait Studios program, where his clear, bold imagery of animals adapts naturally to the graphic language of printmaking. His work is widely collected and reflects the continuation of Kinngait’s carving and print traditions within a contemporary generation of artists.
