Nicotye Samayualie

Nicotye Samayualie is an Inuk graphic artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut. She comes from a family with a strong artistic tradition: her mother, Kudluajuk Ashoona, is an artist, and her grandmother, Keeleemeeoomee Samayualie, was a well-known graphic artist whose work appeared in the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collections during the 1970s and 1980s.
Samayualie is drawn to patterns and the arrangement of everyday objects, finding subjects in both the natural world and contemporary life in Kinngait. Her detailed drawings include still lifes of household and camping objects, fishing equipment and other familiar items, as well as landscapes surrounding her community. Her work combines careful observation with a strong sense of pattern and composition.
