Description
Pauojoungie Saggiak
(b. 1959) Kinngait/Cape Dorset
Pauojoungie Saggiak is an Inuit graphic artist from Iqaluit who grew up with her family in camps throughout southwest Baffin Island. As a child, she was fascinated by the birds and animals around her and began drawing the wildlife she observed. Her family moved to Kinngait (Cape Dorset) in the 1970s, where she later became inspired by the work of other graphic artists at Kinngait Studios.
Saggiak’s work is characterized by bold lines, strong blocks of colour and compositions that distill her subjects to their essential forms. Birds, fish and other wildlife are recurring subjects in her work. Her first prints appeared in the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection in 2016, introducing her distinctive graphic style to a wider audience.
