Description
Qavavau Manumie
(b. 1958)
Qavavau Manumie is an Inuit artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, known for a wide-ranging drawing practice that moves between detailed naturalistic imagery and complex, imaginative compositions.
While some of his works depict animals and scenes from northern life with fine line and pattern, others explore transformation imagery, combining human, animal, and spirit forms in layered, often large-scale compositions. These more expansive works demonstrate a distinctive approach within the Kinngait drawing tradition, where observation and imagination intersect.
Manumie has contributed to the annual Cape Dorset print collections over several decades, and his work is widely collected for both its technical detail and its inventive, narrative scope.
