Description

Lucy Qinnuayuak

Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut
1934–1982

Lucy Qinnuayuak was one of the most distinctive and celebrated artists associated with the print program in Kinngait. Active from the early 1960s onward, she developed a highly recognizable graphic language centered primarily on birds, rendered with symmetry, clarity, and bold decorative pattern.
Her compositions are characterized by strong outlines, flattened space, and rhythmic repetition. Birds—often shown frontally with outstretched wings—become emblematic forms rather than naturalistic studies. Through patterning and stylization, Qinnuayuak transformed familiar Arctic subjects into powerful graphic icons. The balance and symmetry in her work give it both visual stability and immediate impact.

Working within the Cape Dorset print tradition, her drawings translated exceptionally well into stonecut and stencil processes, contributing to the enduring popularity of her editions. Over time, her imagery became closely associated with the identity of Kinngait printmaking itself, and her work was included in numerous annual collections during the height of the program’s international recognition.

Lucy Qinnuayuak’s prints are valued for their strong visual presence, cohesive artistic voice, and established place within the history of Inuit art. Her work appeals to both seasoned collectors and those newly drawn to Inuit printmaking, offering imagery that is at once accessible, distinctive, and historically significant.
